ESSAY QUESTIONS - THE BIG ISSUE.

This magazine was published at a time with a lot of political uncertainty. The political context of this magazine is that the fear of brexit is sweeping across the nation and how much of a big mess it has been is rather concerning to everyone. The magazine was the closest publish to Halloween and the magazine cover is presenting him as a pumpkin. we know this as his hair has been photo shopped onto the pumpkin (a signifier for Halloween.) there is also ghosts in the background (also with links to Halloween) who have faces of famous politicians on them. This could show the audience that although Boris Johnson may have no fears about 'brexit he needs to be aware of other politicians who are trying to do what they think is best for the country.
another publication of the magazine also has a good view of representation and context. the man on the cover is a hetrosexual male who is well known for his acting and composing. this has a good example of representation as the views on masculinity has changed over recent times. this is evident as he has one arm in the air and there is gold dust falling from the top of the page. this wouldn't be typical of a heterosexual man as the stereotype for him would be that he would be into sport. He is also of the BAME community and he also 'tells his story'. this being an interview could inspire young people to follow him in allowing them to combat against stereotypes for their gender and do what they want to do in life without being judged for it. This is a huge social context at the moment as there is a lot of debates around this topic and there is many people who still strictly conform with these dated sterotypes.
analyse why the big issue has used an intertextual approach to brexit on their front cover.
